Postcard: Cairo, where modern Egypt meets Kemet
More than a city, Cairo carries the legacy of ancient Egypt into the present.

Cairo is the largest city in the Arab world and the seat of Egypt’s government, but it sits on ground that has been at the centre of Egyptian life for far longer. Memphis, the first capital of a unified Egypt, lies just to the south, and the pyramids of Giza stand at the city’s western edge.
Cairo itself was founded in 969, yet the land it grew on links it directly to Kemet, the name the ancient Egyptians gave their country.
