Cairo, 2026: lanterns, wood shavings and the Citadel
Old Cairo keeps its craft and character alive, one street at a time.

A lantern maker waiting for the next customer, a workshop full of fresh wood shavings, and the Citadel standing tall over the city. Photographer Yara walked the streets of Old Cairo.

Workshops like these, where lanterns, woodwork and metalwork are still made by hand, have been part of the historic city for centuries, many of them in the lanes below Salah El Din’s Citadel.
Which corner of Cairo should we show you next?
