Egypt marks the 53rd anniversary of the October Victory
Flags, drone shows over the pyramids and a lit-up Cairo Tower as the country remembered 6 October 1973.

Egypt marked the 53rd anniversary of the October Victory on 6 October, the day in 1973 when the armed forces crossed the Suez Canal and broke through the Bar Lev Line, raising the Egyptian flag over Sinai again after six years of occupation.

Celebrations included drone displays forming the Egyptian flag above the pyramids of Giza, and Cairo Tower lit up in the national colours.
The war began at 2pm on 6 October 1973 and remains one of the most important dates in modern Egyptian history. The day is a public holiday, and military museums across the country opened free of charge from 3 to 6 October.
