Bab Zuweila: the view from Fatimid Cairo’s last great gate
Carved domes, towering minarets and a view over the old city that has barely changed in centuries.

Bab Zuweila is one of the last standing gates of Fatimid Cairo. Built in 1092, it marked the southern edge of the walled city, and its twin towers were later topped by the minarets of the neighbouring Mosque of al-Mu’ayyad Shaykh.

Photographer Mariam Hazem climbed to the top. From there, the view takes in carved domes, minarets and the rooftops of the old city, a skyline that has changed remarkably little over the centuries.
Visitors can still climb the minarets today. Have you been up yet?
